Il progetto SIRIUS ottiene i finanziamenti del Bando “STEP”: nasce la nuova piattaforma AI per la sicurezza delle infrastrutture civili

The €3.9 million SIRIUS project will combine Artificial Intelligence, IoT and edge computing to advance structural health monitoring and infrastructure safety.

10 December 2025 – Sapiens Analytics and Boviar have announced that they have secured funding under the STEP programme for SIRIUS – Intelligent Monitoring System for Urban and Civil Infrastructure Safety and Structural and Seismic Assessment, developed in collaboration with the University of Trieste and the University of Naples.

With a total project value of €3.9 million, the initiative aims to transform the monitoring of Italian and European infrastructure assets by introducing an innovative approach based on the integration of Internet of Things (IoT), edge computing and Artificial Intelligence.

The project addresses an increasingly urgent challenge: improving continuous monitoring and enabling timely interventions on bridges, viaducts and other civil infrastructure exposed to environmental and structural stresses, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

"SIRIUS represents the perfect combination of digital innovation and social impact. We are taking Artificial Intelligence out of research laboratories and into the infrastructure that supports our country, making it safer, more predictable and more sustainable. This is a decisive step towards truly intelligent maintenance," said Riz Zigliani, Strategic Business Manager at Sapiens Analytics.

AI and IoT for Intelligent Infrastructure Monitoring

At the heart of the project is the development of an IoT platform with distributed intelligence, designed to simplify, optimise and improve the reliability of data management across heterogeneous sensor networks.

The SIRIUS architecture will be modular and scalable, enabling it to adapt to infrastructure monitoring environments of varying sizes and levels of complexity.

Intelligent modules installed directly on sensor nodes will process information locally, verify the integrity of collected data, identify significant events and transmit only the information relevant to maintenance activities. This approach will help reduce both operational costs and analysis times.

A key feature of the platform will be the integration of embedded Artificial Intelligence algorithms capable of detecting anomalous variations in real time, identifying recurring patterns and generating aggregated performance indicators.

These capabilities will support more accurate planning and execution of both routine and extraordinary maintenance activities, enabling a more proactive approach to structural health monitoring and infrastructure risk management.

Predictive Maintenance and Real-Time Structural Diagnostics

The SIRIUS platform will enable Boviar to provide advanced services to infrastructure operators and maintenance managers, helping them rapidly assess structural conditions through accurate and reliable real-time data processing.

These capabilities will be complemented by tools for remote diagnostics, sensor lifecycle management and AI-powered decision support through predictive algorithms.

By integrating intelligence directly into data acquisition nodes, SIRIUS aims to improve the timeliness and accuracy of structural assessments while supporting more effective maintenance planning and risk prevention.

"SIRIUS marks a significant step forward in infrastructure diagnostics. Integrating Artificial Intelligence directly into data acquisition nodes will enable us to obtain more accurate and timely information, significantly reducing risks and improving maintenance planning. It represents a major breakthrough for the structural monitoring sector," said Salvatore Latte Bovio, CEO of Boviar.

Advancing Infrastructure Safety Through AI and Predictive Analytics

SIRIUS has also been conceived in response to evolving Italian regulations governing infrastructure risk classification and structural monitoring.

Recent guidelines call for increasingly accurate and continuous monitoring capabilities, alongside systems designed to reduce false alarms, uncertainty and operational costs.

Within this context, the project offers a scientifically grounded and technologically advanced solution, combining the industrial expertise of Sapiens Analytics and Boviar with the scientific contribution of its university partners.

By integrating AI-powered predictive analytics, distributed computing and intelligent sensor technologies, SIRIUS aims to support a transition from conventional infrastructure monitoring towards more proactive, data-driven maintenance and risk management.

With its ability to adapt to different operational environments and address the safety requirements of communities, SIRIUS aspires to become a European benchmark for infrastructure risk prevention, contributing to the development of safer, more efficient and more resilient cities.
